Tropical resorts are undeniably superlative, but it’s easy to get the impression that once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all. We run them together regardless of what latitude they lie on, or which time-zone they are governed by. Writing about tropical resorts is similarly simplistic. How many times do you read ‘unspoilt beaches’, ‘big skies’ and ‘big blue seas’ in descriptions of places many leagues apart?. Using these words is very easy, because they’re very true. We all have an idea of tropical paradise and these places fit them, so there’s no need to change and strain our language. If you’re after a tropical holiday that ticks all these cliches, it may as well not matter where you’re headed. This isn’t to say there’s anything wrong with wanting these elements in your tropical holiday. You really can’t argue with hours laying on fantastic beaches with a beautiful hotel.. Somewhere close and easily accessible comes highly recommended, Mauritius holidays are easily recommended.
Sometimes though, holidays need to have a little more, and need to feel a little more genuine. For my money, the Caribbean has it covered. Caribbean trips I’ll instantly and readily recommend? St Lucia Holidays to open with. For me, the clincher is the way that natural beauty in St. Lucia seems to have been turned up to 11. The raw volcanic energy that created this island is just something else, and the way it bubbles calmly away still has some great side-effects: theraputic bathing pools and the ‘drive in volcano’ are both must visits.
But if beautiful scenery just seems a little too stereotypically tropical, Dominican Republic Holidays are more than worthy of your attention. On some level it’s like a sanitised Cuba, a large Caribbean nation with a tumultuous past, but a fascinating melting pot of European, African and Native Taino Indian culture. This former Spanish Colony has a Latin American feel in its food, with splashes of African and Indian ingredients. Santa Domingo is the capital, but as the first European settlement it’s first in the Caribbean for architecture, art and infrastructure. If you’ve ever found the ‘built yesterday’ hotels of other tropical resorts, the history so visible in the Dominican Republic won’t fail to impress.
