A gap year is a trip that is undertaken by many students after they have left school and before they attend university. The months spent abroad by these people can be a life changing experience and one can learn a lot from a trip like this. By participating in volunteer opportunities overseas as part of your gap year you are able to help the lives of the people who really need the help. Perhaps you wish to work with HIV/AIDS orphans in Kenya or maybe you want to work on a conservation project in Malawi. Whatever it is you want to do this is how your dream can become a reality;

You must firstly consider which project it is you want to participate in as there are lots to choose from. You can choose to volunteer in Tanzania or another of Africa’s wonderful destinations. In most cases volunteers are asked to pay for their own trip so you must take your finances into consideration. Ensure you search the internet for projects within your budget. Programs vary in length from a couple of weeks to a year. During your searches on the internet you will find lots of projects working with children, animals and local communities. There’s something for everyone when participating in a project to volunteer overseas.

You must also speak with your university councillor about your trip and see if you are able to defer your start date until you have completed your gap year. You’ll be pleased to know that many universities do in fact allow their students to defer their course for a year; in fact some even encourage the participation on a gap year.

Once you have thoroughly searched for a specific project and destination then the next step is to choose a reputable company to go with. Programs that have been running for many years are usually your best and will be able to tailor the trip around you. These programs will often put you with other volunteers of a similar age and interest. Once you have confirmed all your details with the company that is where the fun begins!
